Faculty supplement salary from grant

Considering the 75R/25E split, you are already being paid for fulltime, year round to do research and extension. You don't need to find summer salary, and the institution has already budgeted you salary. You have it made in a way that most would envy. I would not try to mess with that.

Some raised the idea of buying out extension time to spend more time on research. That is a terrifically bad idea. Come tenure time, you would not have done enough towards 25% of your work expectations, which is pretty much an automatic no tenure. At many places with these splits, 100% research is not  possible for tt professors, who are expected to be multifunctional.
