you could say it's very nearly ideal.

I forgot to thank you for such an informative comment. You could have a second career in local government or the chamber of commerce promoting the area if you wanted one.

Does anyone know of an online calculator that shows how heavily various types of retirement income are taxed by each U.S. state? I can easily find webpages that list whether, for example, social security or pension income gets taxed, but I'd like a calculator that simultaneously spews out results for all states once I've plugged in numbers.

Convinced the wifey to visit Puerto Rico over the winter holidays. Maybe we could establish legal residence there for 6 months plus 1 day per year. Depends on how much she likes the food.

Perhaps an older copy of Turbotax would let you input your federal information and then change your state to simulate what the state taxes for each one would be.

The final day to do taxes for 2023 is in october. You may still be able to download the current edition, but it would not be at a discounted price.  I guess that it would depend on how much you want the information.

Hurricanes like Helene are one reason Florida isn't on my list of possible retirement locations.

Anywhere near a coast, really. I'm never moving any closer than 200 miles from any coast (except perhaps a Great Lake coast).

Depending where you live, the coast might come to you.
Also, does not your username show an affinity for the wet element?

We are in agreement - coasts are nice to visit but not the safest place to retire. Appalachians aren't looking too safe right now either. Perhaps Shangri-la?

Are you doing ok in your part of NC?

I have students in the NC National Guard who have been activated, and another in the Greenville-Spartanburg area who has electrical power but food and drinking water is in short supply.

Sorry, never answered this. Yes, my husband and I are in central, not western, NC, so we got rain and high winds that passed after an interesting half-day watching trees bowing down to the strong winds--nothing like the thunderous buckets of water that rained down on mountainsides and spawned landslides and enormous floods in western NC.

Colleagues and friends responded after a few days to say they were safe. That said, many had experienced significant flooding in their homes and on their properties, and several were cut off from grocery stores and so forth (or experiencing intermittent outages of electricity or Internet). A few were struggling with water and sewer issues.

To add insult to injury, it snowed for the first time this fall a few days after the worst of the flooding (while some people were still living in tents).

(Still completely gobsmacked that a hurricane did all of that to the WESTERN third of our state. Truth is a great deal stranger than fiction, sometimes.)

What advice do people have about Trump-proofing my retirement savings? My TIAA account is currently 93% in equities (index funds). The remainder is in a TIAA annuity that guarantees a minimum 3% annual return. I have $100K in a Roth IRA that is 100% equities. I max out my contributions to both every year. I'm 58, and I have a chronic illness that probably makes retirement before 65 and Medicare a bad idea.

I see Trump and his lackeys trying to institute the equivalent of Brexit over the next four years. The billionaire tech bros and plutocrats in Congress don't care about inflation, health care, or Social Security. Their and their children's futures are already secured.

Where did England's immigrant physicians and nurses move to?

Retire to Spain and go on their national health plan for cheap.
