Establish an ORCID ID?

The ACLS began asking people to include ORCID IDs in their grant applications (which is the first time I recall seeing a humanities funder do this). I think that ultimately they'd like to be able to pre-populate some of the form fields for their grants from people's ORCID accounts, but that isn't developed yet.

I've often wondered what, exactly, the point was (given how little it's used in my field), so thank you all for the info.
I know it's a genus.

I haven't tried but if it's like Academia, they probably have a DM system.

Not that anyone ever answers (or, only a few).

Academia.edu is in part a social network. OrcID is primarily a unique identifier.

OrcID doesn't provide services, such as DM, but enables other services that use OrcID to get the DM to the right person among several with similar names. Academia could use it for disambiguation of users if they wanted.

Many organizations use that unique ID for manuscript or citation management. Some of those organizations, like Elsevier, aggregate data--such as publications--and index it by OrcID rather than name.

That limited function also means that signing up requires a minimal profile. The other services do their automated thing to populate your profile at those places.

Ah, thanks.

Just to chime in:

I am in history; I established an ORCID ID several years ago.

It has not been earth shattering, especially since my name is not particularly common, but it has been useful for some journals that ask for it.

I cannot see any downside to it unless you want to keep some of your publications secret, which is unlikely. (I do know some professors in one field who have published things in a completely different field, but all of them are tenured so it really doesn't matter.)

My recollection was that there was some initial time investment in identifying previous publications, but after that, so long as the ORCID ID was supplied, new publications are updated automatically.

I was accepted by a journal which essentially established one for me.  I have not updated it with my other materials.

Not hard if you cut and paste article DOI. I believe it will also search for you and offer some matches based on your name, that you can accept or reject. You can also link it to google scholar.

This thread prompted me to update my ORCID page. I added about 10 articles and 1 book. It is very easy if you have the DOI. If you do not have the DOI, you need to find it, which may or may not take some time. I still have three articles that I have not been able to add; all three are foreign, and two are before assigning DOI was common. I would suppose that all three actually have DOIs but I don't care enough to drop everything and search for them.

You could also add encyclopedia entries, book reviews, etc., but I really don't care about a book review I published 20 years ago, or an encyclopedia entry I wrote as a PhD student.

I learned about ORCID when I was asked to be a peer reviewer for an article, and was surprised to find four other folks with my name (which isn't very common) already on there. I'm glad I signed up!

Not (so far) on ORCID, but on Academia, there's someone who researches testosterone physiology issues, with a name a letter away from mine.

I have to keep disavowing any ties to those articles about once a week...

I have one. I believe it's useful if another researcher shares the same name as you, right?
