I think most Nobel winners probably don't even care any more what their institution does. They know they can walk somewhere else (or probably just retire if late enough in career), or write books, go on lecture circuit or whatever. But if they were happy with their school before, they'd probably be reasonably happy after. In any case, its not like most R1's even could match that kind of money or prestige, so what the heck are they supposed to do but act happy, and maybe give you a nicer office, a teaching reduction if you want it or need it, i.,e. stuff they do for much less famous people.

I've known several Nobel laureates, both before and after they won the prize, and collaborated with one. Every one I know ended up leaving their institution for greener pastures within a couple years of winning (although one came back after a couple of years).

These people get massive recruitment overtures constantly. Even if they're happy where they are, the lure of new opportunities and massive $$$$ can be a draw that's hard to turn down, at least at first.

Now, if we're talking about an invite to the Oxford Round Table...

One of the best threads ever.

I believe is now called "Oxford / International Round Table Symposium."
Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring
Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To flutter--and the Bird is on the Wing.

I am amazed at what has survived COVID. Like cockroaches & twinkies, it will be eternal.

That and the Picky Eater thread were gold.
