I am currently drafting the final chapter of my dissertation, aiming for about 17,000 words. In September, I wrote 3,000 words in ten sessions, bringing my total up to 5,000 words. My stretch goal is to complete this chapter by the end of December. That would require an improvement on my September productivity by an additional 1,000 words per month – 4,000 per month in all – for the next three months. That won't be easy, since I teach 4/4, but I think it's possible. And even matching my September productivity wouldn't be too shabby. (Shoot for the moon, land among the stars and all that.)

By May, I'm hoping to have a complete draft at about 60,000 words (excluding footnotes). Estimates: 5,000 for introduction and conclusion (each) and about 17,000 for each of three chapters.

For October, then, the realistic goal (I think) is 3,000 more words for 8,000 total. Stretch goal: 4,000 more words for 9,000 total, which would be over halfway through the chapter.

October goals:

Do edits on one article, due the end of the month
Do research for a conference paper proposal, due in November
Write up another article that's been in the queue and submit for review

October goals:
  • Finish and submit paper #1 with colleague
  • Make progress on paper #2 with colleague - I'm taking the lead on the data analysis and will probably turn to this once paper #1 has been submitted
  • Make progress on paper #3 with colleagues - ball is in colleague's court and this is low priority for me
  • Make progress on paper #4 with colleague - ball is in colleague's court and this is low priority for me

I'd also like to come up with a new paper idea or two (I have a few thoughts in mind, but need to flush them out) and I'll have to deal with any rejections or R&Rs that come my way.

Woke up to an R&R, so adding that to the list.

Mostly just teaching stuff today, although it'd be good if I could tackle something else, too.

October:

Finish current article, submit.
Finish previous article, submit.
Consider posting a couple of orphans on Academia, or try one more time with them.
Ponder next-steps, next projects and make a plan.

Working on updating the lit review for my dissertation. Two articles for diss under review, one with supervisor. Three other first author articles accepted (but not part of the diss). Need to finish updated lit review, then move to overall discussion and conclusions for diss.

Managed some proto-indexing, then read a paper and... now there's a new paper I have to write.

October Goals

  • Get focused on sabbatical project!
  • If book proposal is approved by organization, meet with publisher
  • Work on manuscript presented at June conference
  • Read book manuscript draft and write an endorsement for organization by end of the month
  • Complete review of manuscript for journal
  • If time, work on scholarly essay with friend for submission

On Sunday I finally got the good news that the fifth version of my manuscript with subfield colleague was accepted. FINALLY! The article that has been under initial review for over four months is bugging me. My colleague has written the editor twice over the past few weeks to check on the status and has not heard anything back.

My research fellowship team just submitted our preliminary report, which is significantly over the page limit. Since it is a draft, I think we will be told to cut a lot out, but at least we have good content if we turn this into a manuscript.

More productive 18th-c. prowling done.

Got the ball rolling on the R&R today. I have a lot going on with teaching/grading, so my plan is to work on it here and there when time permits. The revisions are pretty minor, so should be manageable.

I'm also planning to dedicate Thursday and/or Friday to getting paper #1 out the door.
