But... Well, maybe things are different down there. But that would be illegal here, and something the union would have to deal with. There are clear criteria for ladder placement and progression.
I know it's a genus.

I'm simply reporting how it works in practice here.

Tentative agreement reached with the graduate student unions,

We'll see if it gets ratified.

I'm not holding my breath.  Campus closes in 5 days and Winter quarter starts January 4th.

The voting is done online. Honestly, I would be very surprised if it isn't ratified.

The agreement seems to be a substantial gain for the grad students, while still being in the realm of what top peer schools are able to do.

The LA Times quotes a student opposed to ratification. Their comments make them sound more entitled than exploited. How big a proportion of the student population will that be?

Meanwhile, the the International Committee of the Fourth International (wsws.org) has been urging students to vote no on a sellout contract negotiated by the notorious capitalists at the UAW and their lackeys leading the campus chapters. How well does that timeworn message resonate with even the most radical students today?

I love the World Socialist Website! I occasionally check in there to remind myself of the good old days! Timeworn message indeed.

What has changed is that the Left has found contemporary capitalism pretty comfortable, for it delivers through government. So, no more revolution, not even by the Woke mob. Instead, it's entitled, and chanting "I want more".
That's not even wrong!

While, of course, also denouncing all of the evils of capitalism and extolling the virtues of socialism. So, maybe a little revolution, provided it doesn't threaten any entitlements.
It takes so little to be above average.

Just because someone says something doesn't mean it is true, Marshy.  Everyone loves capitalism because it is wonderful.

Think.

To flutter--and the Bird is on the Wing.

Stated preference v. revealed preference.

But many refuse to admit it.

If the vote for the postdoc contract is any indication, I suspect the tentative agreement will be ratified. There are a small and vocal minority of students who are unrealistic and entitled, but most students just want to get on with their research and graduate as soon as possible. Also keep in mind that most STEM students are already doing okay even on the older contract because they are appointed higher on the scale, so the fraction of STEM students who were actively picketing was quite low to begin with. Also, campuses like Merced, Riverside, and Davis have much lower costs of living, so I suspect a strong silent majority will vote yes on the contract.

Any sense from UC on a counterfactual... If the grad students had voted no, how long would the other academics who had already ratified their contracts remain on strike?
