Hello:
Does anyone know if there are any peer reviewed journals that are published/maintained by a single editor and not tied to a school or organization?  (But has a peer review board made up of professionals in that field)

Ruralguy

Many, depending on what you mean by "tied" and "single editor." But I suspect you are asking whether they are any good.
Probably most are "myeh."  Are you going to get tenure by publishing in them? For many schools, the answer would be "no."
If you are asking whether it is worth your while to do this yourself, probably not unless you have some reason to believe that a certain niche can be filled by your journal and that it can be sustained.

The Future

Thank you for your reply.  Can you list some 1-4 titles I could check out?

Ruralguy

I can't really do that without identifying myself or at least where I am, which I know a number of you know, but Id rather not. But they are all over, but fairly minor.

Try the MLA directory of periodicals or whatever database your discipline uses.  This is probably best answered by sitting down with an academic librarian somewhere.

Just out of curiosity, why would you particularly want an unassociated journal?

i didnt intend on being cagey here. Think regional and think subdividion of big socisl science fields, As i said, they might not totally fit the bill.

mamselle

Yeah, my first impulse was to ask, "In what field?"

People can't be helpful if they don't know what you're aiming at....

mamselle - general social science

Mobius

There was an ABD when I started grad school who started his own online journal. This person never finished.

I'm not sure why the OP is asking for this. If it's a niche journal that you're aware of and are interested in publishing with, well, you're aware of it and so you don't need other examples.
If, on the other hand, you're thinking of starting a journal, I could see why you're looking for examples, but honestly, starting a journal (especially without a scholarly organization's support) is a miserable business. One (but only one) of the problems is getting enough decent content to publish issues on a regularly basis, especially in the early years. Another problem is convincing potential reviewers that they should give up their precious time for you. Editing a journal, even one that is well established with a steady stream of content and a pool of reviewers, is time-consuming, stressful, and not at all well-rewarded.
Maybe the OP can clarify why they want to have these examples.

The National Teaching and Learning Forum was started by James Rhem, who ran it for many years; it's been bought by Wiley now. Similarly Faculty Focus was started by Maryellen Weimer, but I think Magna runs it now.

The Future

Yay, Morden!!!!!!!   This is the info that I was seeking with my original post.  When others asked for what field, I stated general social science, but since I still had not had a single example of one, I am grateful for any title!!!  Thank you so much for this info.

Also, I understand other posters' comments about my purpose.  I appreciate the comments and concerns - thank you :)

I may or may not pursue anything else with this info, but thank you again, Morden for the actual examples!!!

Morden

Well, I'm not sure they're exactly what you asked for since they're more newsletter-ish than full on academic journal, but it's all I could think of.

The Future

Well, thanks, anyway, for those 2 examples.  I also have some examples of newsletter-ish ones.  Still looking for an example of a peer reviewed one :)

mamselle

Are you studying these to write about them?

Are we being asked to help you answer a question for a research methods course?

This isn't making sense....
