Is this really a true "conservative" point of view? The state government globally banning certain courses? Yikes.

Wahoo Redux

Despite their many protests and constant melodrama about "tyrants" and "government" and "racism," the hardcore conservatives really do want to control what we think and have access to.  And, yeah, they sound an awful lot like racists.

And the use of "woke" in an official government document....ooof.

A prominent Florida department in my field is trying to hire a new department chair. What are the odds that it will be filled internally?

Oh, that's not the half of it. Last year DeSantis and his lackeys passed a law called - I kid you not - the "Stop WOKE Act" which allows anyone (student, member of the public, social media troll) to report professors for teaching from a list of banned, vaguely-framed ideas that offend conservatives. Under many interpretations of the law, it would preclude such topics as the history of slavery, Jim Crow, and ongoing racism in contemporary American society (e.g. red-lining, police violence). The punishment for violation is discipline against the professors - up to and including termination - and a 10% budget cut to the university in question. I'm a humanities professor at a public Florida R1, and we were told in no uncertain terms by our provost that the administration would fire us instantly if there was even the slightest risk to the university budget because of our teaching.

Luckily a judge has issued an injunction against its implementation, but the state has appealed and will likely win in the arch-conservative circuit court.

Yes. Anti black is a conservative point of view.

So there are no black conservatives?
It takes so little to be above average.

There are black conservatives, but they're not black.
That's not even wrong!

Back in the early '90s I worked with a fella who was a openly gay Republican.  He was obsessed with "all the money the Republicans are saving us."  He decided he would simply ignore the numerous attempts by rightwing politicians to severely limit his choices and blackball his orientation so that he could...never could figure out what he was thinking.

I wonder the same thing with AA Republicans.

Perhaps it's a desire to associate with the winners, rather than being seen as a dependent who needs help/protection.

Maybe.  Although it does seem to me the Republicans have been losing a lot lately.

I assumed the reference to "winners" was in economic terms; i.e. people who see themselves as having lots of agency will probably be more conservative than people who see themselves as being at the mercy of "the system".
