There's been talk in my area for decades of people seeing mountain lions, thought to be extinct in the local habitat. A news story just came out saying there's confirmation. Pretty cool!

It's the same in our state.  As nearly as the relevant experts can tell, it's probably an occasional lone cat passing through from neighboring states.  We don't have an actual breeding population.  There are very occasional verified sightings, and lots of vague "black panther" sightings that are probably actually bobcats, dogs, shadows, and who knows what else glimpsed at a distance in poor light.  The real cats are out there.  They're just very, very rare.

Now bears, that's another story.  They've been quite successfully reestablished in the region in recent decades.  I've not seen any, but they've been spotted in our county by people I know.  And they've been seen not far from my parents' house.  Once in while, when Dad takes their dog out in the evening, the dog sniffs the air and acts anxious.  Dad wonders then just what he might be smelling....

I was a fauna magnet on my way to campus this morning: I encountered two raccoons, a deer, a rabbit, and an owl.

I love days like that!

This morning at the city park I saw something dash across my path running from the edge of the pond and away through the woods.  It was definitely not a deer.  I got the impression, from what little I could see in the early-morning shadows, that it was some sort of canid.  It seemed too big to be a fox.  A stray dog?  One of the coyotes I heard howling a few mornings back?
