I'm loving it!

And, it's getting dark earlier. Not quite Spitzbergen [Svalbard] in Winter or Tierra del Fuego in Summer. Looking forward to the end of DST [Daylight Saving Torture]. If only there were direct flights between the two.

Code Orange Air Quality for DC area today and tomorrow

Cooler and rainy.  Much rainier than anticipated, in fact.  It drizzled almost all day yesterday, and has been coming down pretty steady all morning.  Looks like our drought is now broken.  That's good since our region was starting to have wildfires.

We are experiencing A LOT of rain from the incoming hurricane. I hope everyone else in the path is doing ok.

It's been raining for more than 12 hours, so the ground is sodden, and the tropical storm winds won't arrive until later tonight.  I'm eating comfort food and considering placing a bet with myself on how many trees I lose - and, given the wind direction, how many hit the house.  More pragmatic plans include packing the papers, etc. that I don't want to lose so they're easily carried, having basic safety equipment right at hand, and sleeping fully dressed (shoes included) - I'm assuming, of course, that I'll get some sleep.

I've been watching the meanderings of the forecast for a couple of days.  Even with all of our forecasting programs and supercomputers, the weather still holds ugly surprises...

Fall-like for the last three or four days or so. Yet earlier darkness. Wonderful!

A tad icky and humid toady, perhaps the next three days, too. Then Fallish again. Best weather since April!

We can't prevent all good things from happening.

Drove through pouring rain yesterday along fall foliage roads and thruways. Colors were still lovely, despite having to peer through wet and foggy windows to see the trees. There were stretches where I thought I could just reach out and touch the leaves/branches. Height of fall season here, but it's raining, will rain all day and tomorrow, and will continue to rain the day after that. I think only the first 50 miles or so of the seven hour drive was rain-free.

Not one drop of rain since we got some from the outer edge of the Helene system.  And not one drop in the extended forecast.  Evidently all the precipitation in the whole hemisphere has been going to those tropical storm systems.  We'd gladly take a little of it off their hands if we could!

In recent years we've looked forward to October--which I recall from childhood once being an actual month of fall weather--as the month when we could at least finally leave the 90-degree weather behind.  Now we've begun having 90-degree weekends in October.  At least this week is supposed to be more moderate.

30s and 40s overnight
Guess I'm done mowing for the season!

First (light) frost overnight, but then back to lows in the 50s by next week. I'd cleaned up most of the flower beds a month ago (some of which grew out again, with the warm weather), but I left my dahlias which have been blooming like mad. I just covered them with a light sheet last night.

We're supposed to get within shouting distance of frost point overnight, which is lower than usual here for October.  I'd be surprised if we saw an actual frost within the next month.  It usually waits until at least around the middle of November.  If, indeed, we have any frost at all outside the winter months, which has become rare in recent years.

On the one hand, the weather's balmy and quite pleasant considering it's early November. On the other hand, condidtions are prime for fires as we've had no rain for over a month. We've had two fires already in two of the city parks. Fires have also been reported in NJ. Paths and the areas alongside in parks are littered with leaves that have fallen off trees, making these areas vulnerable to sparks from vans and maintenance vehicles, and also to the tossed cigarette butt.

We had some rain earlier today and again in this evening. It's been very dry here for the past few weeks.

We got some good rain in recent days, with at least a little chance of more in the near future.  The wildfire risk should be receding for now, but it's overall still pretty dry.  So far it has been the warmest November I've ever seen.  I've spent most of the year longing for November to come, so that we could finally get a break from summer weather.  Still waiting for that.
