Now the shop tells me they can't even look at it until next Thursday. Oh well. I keep trying to find the bright side in everything but I can't help bitching about all the things that went wrong over the past few days, this breakdown was just the icing on the cake. At least I am still alive! :)

Ugh, that's awful. It happened to me and the hatchling last year. I somehow managed to get the car parked on the side using just my momentum (I was going uphill when it happened, and I noticed before I started going back). It ended up having to get rebuilt, which was hella expensive.

UGH that's the worst! I got my car serviced a few weeks ago, and now I'm noticing tiny spots of oil in the garage. Do I have a leak? Is this from something else? The oil level hasn't seem to dropped, but the dealership told me they won't be able to make an appointment until Jan. When I told them that I'll be traveling and I want to make sure I don't have a massive breakdown they said "well you can try to bring it in next Tues and leave it with us and hope we can fit you in." I NEED for that to happen!

No good deed goes unpunished. Not. F*cking. Ever.

Unrelated: Yes, "Dinner! Come make your plates!" was called, and you-all just kept sitting there yacking. So the rest of us went ahead and made our plates of food. And then we ate them, before it got cold. We're sorry if you-all are new to this process, jerks.

After many days of moving ending at 4am and two days of the hatchling waking up at three am, we're moved in. But the hatchling bumped into the oven in the new place--just a bump, very minor--and the oven door just... Shattered.

It must have had some micro-fractures. Unfortunately, it's a $1700 oven. On the plus side, that's not much more than replacing the cooktop (which I cracked while moving stuff) would have cost. I sure hope the new one isn't as brittle. =/

Update! They got my vehicle in early to diagnose and sure enough I need a new (rebuilt) transmission. $7000.00! VENT #45^&#, %^$#!!!@ Vent!

Happy holidays mechanics. Gulp... Oh well, I keep telling myself thank goodness we are in a position where I can get it fixed, but I am alternating with feeling sorry for myself. There are so many other things I would rather spend that money on... :)

Oh wow @bio-nonymous, that's quite an unexpected whack. My commiserations. Did they recommend getting a new car instead?
Genuinely glad that you can get it fixed though.
Hope your bad 'car'ma is all done and all else is smooth sailing.

Yeah. It made sense for us, because although it's a 20 year-old car, it only had about 150k km on it at the time, so buying a new used car would have cost the same but would have come with more kilometres and possibly other troubles.

Your mileage may well vary though! There's no shame in putting that 7k into another car instead.

Yesterday, had an appointment for the dealership to check my car for an oil leak. They found the faulty gasket and replaced it.

Today on my way to work the low oil and engine lights came on. Great! Wonder what they screwed up yesterday? Took it back, hopefully its just a sensor that needs resetting or something.

We have a new course which is being offered for the first time next semester. The student portal tells them it doesn't count towards their degrees. As a result, the three sections we're running are under-enrolled (and would normally be subject to cancellation). (It absolutely does count, and I know, because it was my job to design the course and pass it through the approval process.)

The reason is that the reg software doesn't recognize courses as counting towards degrees until a student takes the course and graduates with the degree in question. Sigh. Who the fuck designed that piece of software?

Wow. I guess my institution isn't the only one that thinks that automation should be privileged over human intelligence and common sense!

We have a new Administration with low experience.

They scheduled the campus holiday party, but didn't put out any notifications until a few days ahead. And then just a single message. Most of the faculty are either unaware of it or had already made plans.

I came into the party 45 minutes late to hopefully avoid the obligatory blah-blah talking and self-congratulating. I just wanted to grab some food, do some social networking, and head back out to do work. That's what a lot of people do at work parties operated during work hours.

Noooo. The blah-blah talking is over, but the Admin are forcing everyone to stay in their seats and play games for at least an hour without giving out any of the food. That's right, the food trays are all covered up and the attendees are all trapped in their seats and slowly starving.

It's 1pm and nobody still can get to any of the food. I walked out. I noticed that some of the staff are also loitering outside the building, seemingly avoiding the party until the food access begins.

I have never seen such a thing. Are our administrators complete idiots?

My lab has not had working heat pretty much all fall, and facilities keeps giving my my staff the run around-- multiple service orders closed without resolution, poor communication, repeated promises that it will be fixed "tomorrow". I brought them a small space heater to at least keep the office room warm-ish. But now it is much colder and it just isn't tenable to have anyone working in the lab under those conditions.

Finally escalated it up the chain of command and got the head of facilities attention and they brought us space heaters while they wait for a part to come in next week. Seemed like problem (sort of) solved. But the space heaters have over-loaded the circuits, so the computers all shut down! So now the space heaters are off again.

Their proposed solution was to increase the temp in the halls and have us keep the doors open. Had to point out that wasn't an option for multiple reasons (noise, confidentiality, people potentially walking off with expensive computers and equipment). Now they are "looking into" if there is anything else they can do.

At least they are now trying, but ARGGG!

That was a rhetorical question, right?

Also, hugs, the beverage of your choice, and the hope that this, too, shall pass...

Dear accessibility office,

The last day of class was Dec. 4. It is not reasonable to expect me to give you a copy of the final exam by December 6. It is especially unreasonable for you to have arbitrarily decided that the exam date is December 9, when it is, in fact, an untimed take-home exam, and when you have been informed of that fact since September 1.

Bugger off.

Earlier this week my eye doctor ruled that I have an infection and has sentenced me to 6 weeks of eyedrops twice a day. Ack! I am squeamish about my eyes and eyedrops give me mini-panic attacks. If it weren't for my loving husband helping me, I Could. Not. Do. This.
