Title: August research thread
Post by: sinenomine on August 01, 2022, 04:26:16 AM
On the list for this month:

1. Finish a peer review of an article
2. Revise and send off a journal article
3. Continue writing an article for an edited collection
4. Think about possible paper topics for an upcoming conference

Back to Article B, now that the book review has been submitted.

Article A is in my friend-reader's hands, still, but B is due at the end of the month, so it's the focus now.

Today, I'll just start on my conference paper and maybe do some Newslettering.

I love it when an editor is really, really good.

One I used to write for used to say, "A good editor makes you sound more like yourself."

This editor's suggested revision is almost seamless...it sounds the way I should have written it.

Also, the governing board of my main professional association has nominated me to stand for election to their ranks!

Some article A revisions are back, so finish the review, do those, then on to Article B.

Student at 6.30 PM; move to cat-sitting spot w/A/C at 5.00.

Should be doable.

Yesterday I had to rescan several items that I did previously with the wrong scanner settings (who knew the scanner would default to legal sized paper?) then I went to the library to redo the accessibility work on the documents I had spent time on based on the original scans. I plan to return today to make progress on the project.

Given that I was wildly distracted with lawyer/home-buying nonsense all day yesterday, I was actually quite productive. Finished a review, finished my contribution to a massive replication project, and finally recorded my stimuli for my new experiment. Today I'm going to just quietly hang out at home, in my pyjamas, and segment sound files while eating bonbons.

^Brilliantly decadent. Especially the bonbons...

Waiting to see if there are any last edit requests for review, otherwise done and in.

Back to Article B.

Requested Article A feedback was a false alarm, the file was their request to me for a quick lookover of something else. So, still waiting on that.

Next steps are mulling about within, several roads are diverging in that yellowed wood.

Found materials for Article B. Will try to read them today.

Back to wondering about Article A. My friend-reader seems distracted about something they're working on. Trying to decide if I should just send it on to the person who asked for it (not under deadline, but she's in her 80s....) or prod friend-reader one last time...

No word further on review, I think it's done and dry.

August Goals

  • Finalize all prep work for sabbatical project
  • Work on follow-up study manuscript with coauthors
  • Prepare scholarly essay with friend to submit to identified journal
  • Draft and submit book proposal

I had a productive two days! Yesterday I dug into the scholarly essay and found a different journal from the one we were targeting that took commentaries around the word count I was closer to (rather than adding 2,000 more words). I added in a few sources I had gotten from the library plus referenced a perfect advance online article from this journal, and submitted it!

Today I spent the bulk of the day in the library and went turbo on finishing my sabbatical project prep! I can now focus on the "main project" and I am so thrilled. I am going to start on the book proposal tomorrow.

I got the book proposal draft started and created a shared drive for my potential coauthor. I think I convinced hu to join me on this writing endeavor since we have such different disciplines and could never write together unless it was a topic related to hu's new administrative role and my teaching and research area. I am going to work on this a little bit here and there before we meet next week, as the proposal has to be submitted by the end of the month.

I also plan to get started on the actual sabbatical project today now that I finished prep work yesterday. I am no longer tied to library technology and can work on it from anywhere.

A few reviewers notes for the review, and it's done

Article A, I'm starting to think, can get a tiny organizational tweak, and then go out, my friendly reader's too caught up in their own stuff.

Leaving B to get final attention this week, out to more reliable friendly editor next week, and back for tweaking before its 9/1 due date.

Students in between.

I returned to the library and finished the rest of the edits I needed to make this morning. Then I made significant progress on the book proposal. Also, yesterday I came across a very appropriate call for submissions for the project my colleagues and I presented in June. We just have to submit a 500 word abstract by the end of September so I am excited about that possibility!
Title: Re: August research thread
Post by: Parasaurolophus on August 10, 2022, 12:27:33 PM
Claws, yes. It was a resounding success (of course)!

I wasn't going to do anything, but I had some time so I took the exam for the training thing, passed it, and now it's done and I'm certificated (though not, alas, certified).
Title: Re: August research thread

We're all of us here on this-here fora certified, ya know....or, maybe, "certifiable" is the word I want?

-=-=-=-=-
Review done and submitted....finally, I think.

Now, that Article A organizational issue, I might just have enough brain cells to rub together to get a start on that.

Then Article B.

For some reason I got motivated and cranked out a 500 word draft proposal and sent it to my coauthors. I know they are busy and this is not due for seven weeks, but I feel like it would be great to get it in early so we can focus on the manuscript and have a timeline in place. I really had a productive day!

Polishing up A one more time and sending to another friend-reader.

Goal: turn it in, in whatever shape, since it will still be vetted, next week.

Focus on B today and this weekend, try to get to the point I can send to two other friend-readers on the 17th, 2 weeks before it's due.

Today's goal: go back, check previous references, see if there's anything I've omitted, and scan for smoothness overall.

Start thinking about next steps, which might have to take a hiatus since I may have to do some real-life-stuff shortly (I just have this 'feeling' my housing situation could change and I need to have all my references and books in order so if a move becomes necessary, they will be on the top of the pile. It feels as if I am just now getting into a good work rhythm and I'd like to proactively protect that if possible.)

Final edits back and accepted and returned on review; done for real? (This editor is really good but keeps coming back with new queries).

Article A's friendly reader just came back with an annotated version so I'll be busy with that for a day.

Article B is on track but needs to get finished shortly.

Article C might even get done and submitted somewhere; hadn't expected that would be possible but it's been happening 'in the waiting time' between all the others' going out and coming back.

Student shortly.

August goals:

  • Make progress on finalizing paper #1 (solo) and, if possible, get it to a journal
  • Make progress on paper #2 with colleague
  • Make progress on paper #3 with colleagues
  • Make progress on paper #4 with colleague, which we are supposed to present at a conference in mid or late Sept (ball is in colleague's court at the moment)
  • Decide whether to pursue paper #5 with colleague or take it off my list for a while (maybe forever)
  • Decide whether to abandon paper #6 with colleague, which has been rejected from many journals and which my colleague is apathetic about
  • Revise and submit paper #6 with colleague to journal - to be abandoned if this submission does not work out
  • Revise and submit paper #7 with colleague to new journal
  • Revise and submit paper #8 with colleagues to new journal

I managed to submit Paper #1, so I am crossing one major thing off my list. However, I am also adding two more items to my list after receiving a couple of rejections last week.

I've also made decisions about whether to pursue paper #5 (taking it off my list for now) and #6 (will submit to one more journal - a low tier outlet that I like - before abandoning).

Made a list for the rest of the month; it includes all the papers, etc. already in process; today:

[x - nearly all done, lists for next 3 days to finish done] Bib. and notes on mini-Article C, maybe do a draft submission letter, a friend suggested a couple placements I hadn't considered, so that's a start there as well.

[  ] More edits on Article A, finish and send to the person who wanted to see if it will work for a blogsite they have going, or as an article.

[  ] That should finally clear the decks for the last push on Article B, and since I have no students for the next week (the last one just informed me they're gone until the 26th) time will be clear and open for that.

Either the LMS stuff or the conference paper.

Bit of both. Made most of the slideshow for my talk. It's far and away my prettiest slideshow ever. It looks good!

Nope, they're not there. (A bit smelly, though...)

Getting grumpy and tired of this paper--perhaps a sign it's time to finish it up?

Since it's due soon, that's fortuitous...

Got more done. Still can't find the folks I'm looking for, maybe they emigrated (well, I know a couple did, but their parents didn't!)

Still more to do but it's moving along.

The book review I just did started out dreary but an enlightened editor made it delightful....may you have the same good fortune.

More tomorrow...whatever I've found by then is what goes into the article, it needs to be finished.

Whoops, forgot to update. I read some. I'm a quarter through now.

I did find out about a novella from 1899 in which a man's brain is transplanted into an elasmosaur. So that was unexpected, and very cool.

Hmm. Was the elasmosaur improved or degraded by the transplantation, I wonder?

I.e.: Article B continues.

Excelsior...empathy over here for reviewing "stuff ya don't even wanna read"....it does end.

I'm moving out of my kitty-care place today--not far, but the change of scene has been nice.

I'm still hoping to get a couple hours' editing in before I leave; I'm nearly packed (not much) and ready to go, just need to be sure my people got out of Amsterdam ok.

Article B, last week, here we go!

Read one of the papers (it's okay--a good idea, middling execution) and read some of the book. It was slightly less painful than the last chunk.

  • Revise paper #9 for resubmission

I received a R&R yesterday, so adding that to my list. This is my first success with a journal in what feels like an eternity (really more like a year) and I like the paper, so excited to make the revisions. However, I'm swamped with teaching and other research projects so I probably won't get started on revisions until September.

I was back scanning and then in the library doing more edits yesterday for the sabbatical project. I also met with my colleague/friend who decided I should solo author the book proposal/eventual book if approved, and I spent much of the afternoon yesterday on that. This morning I got even further on the book proposal (it is about 95% completed) so I feel confident about submitting it on time before the end of the month/early next week. I did a little work on my fellowship project today, for which I have a meeting this afternoon.

More poking, fewer results = time to stop poking.

Especially when I see a name in a newspaper article and I catch myself idly thinking maybe I should look it up to see if their wedding shows  up in Foster's "London Marriage Licenses, 1521-1869"....

Snack, back to editing and no more poking.

  • Finalize all prep work for sabbatical project
  • Work on follow-up study manuscript with coauthors
  • Prepare scholarly essay with friend to submit to identified journal
  • Draft and submit book proposal

I am happy to report that I submitted the book proposal yesterday! I feel very excited about that. Now I just wait a month until I face the board that decides whether or not it will proceed to the publisher for consideration. I have been working on my sabbatical project today too. I did accept two manuscripts to review from different journals that I will need to do in September. However, I am feeling really positive right now about my progress so that is definitely a good way to start the week!

Paper #3 has now been submitted and colleague sent me a draft of paper #4, so I'm marking them off the list (even though I have a lot of work to do on #4 now that it is back in my hands). Next month should be a productive one in terms of getting #s 7 and 8 out the door and making progress on #s 4 and 9. Paper #2 is also hanging over my head and I know my coauthor is annoyed with me for being slow, but I'm overwhelmed with other things at the moment. Hoping to get my head above water by mid-to-late September.

This month (they're not all research tasks, but they do need doing):

  • Write conference panel paper (which will be folded into my next book).
  • Complete at least one of two REB supplementary training course things.
  • Prepare August Newsletter.
  • Update syllabi for the fall (ugh).

Stretch:

  • Finish up the paper I started in July.
  • Make cosmetic alterations to Co-Authored Paper 3 and send it somewhere.

I didn't quite hit those stretch goals, but instead I refereed three papers and read 75% of a book I have to review by January. And I completed both REB courses.

I also didn't exactly write the conference paper; I wrote most of it, and more or less made my presentation. But it's close enough that I can just tinker until I have to give it.
