Title: April writing challenge
Post by: Puget on March 28, 2020, 06:28:05 PM
For those who want social support and accountability for writing during difficult times. Very simple:

1. Every weekday AM, post specific, measurable, and achievable writing goal(s) for the day (no "work on paper", something more like "draft first two paragraphs of discussion section").

2. Do that writing task for at least 30 minutes during the day

3. Check in with your progress at the end of the day.

We have a few days before we start, I suggest revisiting your goals for the term and rejiggering to make a new plan given that the old one is likely pretty unrealistic at this point (I badly need to do this and have been avoiding it, so that will be on my list for Monday). Maybe just make a plan for April if longer out seems overwhelming right now. Post your plan here if you like.
Ideas for making a good term plan here: https://sarneckalab.blogspot.com/2018/07/writing-workshop-chapter-2.html (https://sarneckalab.blogspot.com/2018/07/writing-workshop-chapter-2.html)

I look forward to writing with you all and cheering everyone on!

Thank you for starting this thread.

I'm sorta in, but I'll do better if I post my tomorrow goal before I go to bed instead of a today goal when I get up, since part of the problem is getting up and looking at things that are not writing. Sorry for violating the rules.  I also post Friday haiku on random other days.

My tomorrow goal is small: to fix the end of the section of my book intro that I'm working on right now. It is just a few very very snarled up paragraphs, but I won't have much time and I will feel lovely and relieved if I can get them done.

(This is not the place to whine about the rest of what I must do tomorrow to be ready to teach on Monday...)

I'm in. Going to work on a plan of battle. As I typically write early in the AM and do my analysis later, I'll post first thing and probably have something measurable early. In the meantime, going to try and tie off the last part of one of these papers tomorrow (two paragraphs to edit/rewrite), and finish a new short paragraph reviewing literature on another, so I don't have to have these two papers on the April list.

I did this, sort of, but it resulted in a "loose idea" that is important but could go a lot of different places. Tomorrow is a hell day. I will take 10 minutes to consider organization. Tuesday I'll get more done!

Been editing.  Almost done with draft. May add in some Foucault but trying to keep the word count under 6K.  Want to get this out the door for my own sense of forward momentum and accomplishment. Then on to the book project!

I'm up and about, was just waiting for the month to begin.

This week has quickly been eaten by more meetings than I could possibly believe, however that's no excuse, I still have time each morning (preferred writing time) so will be kicking things off for Day 1. Plan for the first day is to start writing a new proposal I'm leading on a new idea, and/or write a paragraph that a colleague asked me to help with for a manuscript I'm coauthoring. Would normally go the paper route, but I have some analysis to do before I can spend some time there and want to make a strong start. I'm going to go for the 30 minutes route, rather than words, as that's usually enough time for me to do a bit more in first draft.

OK here we go, Day 1!

Writing goals for today:
1. Grad student #1 overdue R&R: Comments/edits on revised discussion section and cover letter, help her cut down back to word limit, submit.
2. Grad student #2 R&R: comments/edits on revised full draft and cover letter

I'm going to do these first today, before grading takes over.

What are your (specific, achievable) writing goals for today?

My goal for today:

Figure out how to make parallel script running work.

  • Minimum goal: on a baby toy script
  • Ideal goal: on my actual script ---currently running now! Computer fan is whirring loudly, so certainly it's doing *something*
  • Stretch goal: send the whole task off to the high-performance computer cluster

So success this morning.

write a section that a colleague asked me to help with for a manuscript I'm coauthoring

734 words later, and 3 paragraphs in 45 minutes, and its reading pretty well.

For the rest of the day, I'm working toward clearing the decks of a proposal review, a paper review and starting to edit the 12 writing intensive 10 page drafts my students submitted before I get consumed by meetings for the afternoon.

In a happy side note, my partner is a Ph.D. student working on her proposal, and has decided to join us. She's working towards her first of 3 aims and managed to put together 369 words in a couple of paragraphs.

Good luck to all on their goals. Will post my morning plans tomorrow for Day 2.

I finished my task! It is now running away happily on the hpc cluster (my first such job!) and I am learning to my dismay that cpu time can go faster than real-world time, which means that the estimated amount of processing time I requested may not be enough for the task. On the other hand, this also makes clear the distinction between cpu time and wall time that I was puzzling over.

Knowledge!

It's rather modest, but it's a creative piece (for a public-facing book), and I'm not in a creative discipline, so it's harder and I'm rusty.

Plus, there's a ton of grading and other teaching work waiting for me.

I did not do all those April Fool's list tasks but I did do 90 minutes on my intro. It went slower than expected, so I didn't get as much ground covered as I'd hoped, but I solved a knotty problem.

I did this last week and this process not only improved my organization, but inspired an epiphany about connections across certain sections in my intro that will dramatically improve my entire book! Let us know how it goes!

(Said epiphany will also prevent me from achieving my self-imposed deadline but I think The Virus has already done that for me anyhow. This book clearly needs to "cook" a little longer anyhow.)

This writing challenge helped me refocus today when I got distracted by other stuff to do--so thank you Puget for setting this up. I completed my reverse outline and saw a couple places where I can make the introduction clearer right away, but I also saw a couple nasty knots. Tomorrow I will work on making the easier changes and hope for an epiphany.

Great to see so much writing happening today! Everyone is off to a great start. My writing day was VERY long, because grad student #1's draft was VERY OVER THE WORD LIMIT. After many cutting efforts I got it down so it is just 66 words over and sent it back to her-- she's going to have to find those last 66 words herself, as I am going to bed. On the plus side grad student #2's paper is ready to be resubmitted.

Last round of big meetings today will bite into this, but here goes:

1. Write out final guides for freshpeeps for how to get out of their course. It's like writing a technical manual, I tells ya.
2. 20 minutes on invited lecture.
3. Grade until my eyes bleed. There is no screen time, now; only time.

Onward, all!

Seems like I'm pretty consistent for the writing. 730 words down toward the above proposal, laid out a nice framework and the initial concepts which will get us moving on it (Due in June). My co-writer is moving well on her proposal, and added another 383. We are both finding this thread a substantial motivation. Need to find a way to get stuff done today so I have plenty to write about tomorrow, but the meeting monster threatens.

Good morning fellow writers!

Grad student who's overdue R&R I worked on till late last night did submit early this AM, so that's finally done! (And yes, we have worked on her time management for the past 3 years. . .)

I think it's actually possible all three grad students will have submitted papers by early next week!

JCu16, I didn't say how long they had been working on said papers ;-). All in all though, you are right, they are awesome and I'm damn proud of how well they've been navigating suddenly not being able to work in the lab and run their studies. Another Monday, another goal.

Modest again, because there's a ton of teaching stuff to do today:

  • 200 words of the chapter, which ought to finish up a section.

422 words. There will have to be a cull when I'm done with this bugger.

Good morning writers!
I completely failed to do my writing task on Friday (got derailed by endless Zoom meetings and grading), but I'm going to get back on track with it today!

Today's goal: Spend at least 30 min. on the long-neglected collaborative pre-registration

Spent more than 30 min., though I didn't get as far as I had hoped. Will work on it again tomorrow.

A busy day of Zoom meetings today, so I will set the modest goal of another 30 min. of working on the preregistration, but with the stretch goal of finishing the intro revisions.

Today I must finish a grant application and a job application. I'm hoping that posting here will provide added motivation.

So didn't post my goal, but managed to find 30 minutes to write this afternoon. Managed to scrape out 250 words on a new article and on a proposal, but really couldn't find my flow, plus burnt out from teaching.

Yesterday was a wash.
Today I revised the next subsection of the introduction. I got it done but spent far too long doing it.
For tonight:
  • Re-read the next subsection and think.
I got this done then someone I liked a lot (but didn't know well) died. I was upset so I didn't write for a few days. But I want to finish this book, a lot of people are dying, and what if I'm next? Plus writing is a good escape from thinking about politics, plague, and pestilence. So I got back to work today. Morbid, I know.

Anyhow, at last I did this (again, spending far too long on it, hard to focus):
Quote

  • Revise the next section. This might take 2 days.
Tomorrow, I'll move on to tackle the next section. It is 3200 words of fluffy mess, hope to work through and reduce at least the first part (1200 words) and sketch out a plan for dealing with the second part.

Stay healthy everyone and keep writing.

Today I must finish a grant application and a job application.

I didn't think I would make it, but then I realized that the job application was due tonight--so now that is finished, and I am going to proofread the grant application tomorrow.

My spouse works in a medical-related field and has just gotten a new job, so we will be moving this coming weekend to a temporary house near that position. After the move, I think I'll be able to establish a better routine.

I'm so sorry for your loss, hungry_ghost.

Failed to succeed yesterday, but today had to write up a page panel summary for a project, so going to call that success. Wife also succeeded today with a 30 minute stint writing, so making progress.

Almost to the bottom of my grading pile (how do English professors handle reading so many papers - 10 of these 12 pages and I'm struggling), so looking forward to making some progress over the next few days until the deluge begins again.

Removed 300 or so words (a tangent) and reworked the idea in about 200 words.  Still not done though.  A little desperate to finish the article, which is not always a good way to generate quality material.

English profs simply plow through grading.  We get good at reading quickly and deciphering issues quickly.

I had a great writing day today, but I've had a hard time staying on it every single day. Yet clearly this is what I need to do.
I usually write at home and do teaching tasks in my office, but somehow not going anywhere has really thrown me off.  So I'm going to try a slightly different version of this challenge.
My plan for the week (measuring minutes instead of words since I'm at the revising, cutting, and reorganizing stage):

Good morning writers! I'm back from my Passover mini-break and feeling refreshed.

Today's goal:
Finally finish up collaborative preregistration (some technical bits of methods section left, which will take a bit of research to finalize) and ping co-authors to take a look.

In good news, R&R we resubmitted on the 6th was accepted on the 10th with no further revisions (editor must have approved it without sending back out to reviewers, which we weren't sure would be the case). I'm especially pleased with this one because it started as an honors thesis and the kick-ass former honors student who will probably be applying to PhD programs this year and my senior grad student are co-first on it, so a nice CV addition for both of them.

I feel badly about not checking in here, but my coauthor and I submitted our revised manuscript last Friday, meeting the deadline which was not extended. I have a soft deadline this week that I made a lot of progress on today. One of my recent publications was selected to be featured in a practitioner newsletter, which is actually a really big deal in my field. It basically means the implications from my research could have immediate impact because anyone who has the power to implement my suggestions will read about it in plain language! My coauthors and I just have to cut it down to something shorter without citations and consider our audience. It is the most public/widely read my work might ever be, and I am so excited about it! That is good motivation to finish it as soon as we can!

PS-I finished a review for a journal today too, woohoo!

This afternoon I spent 2 hours doing 60 minutes. One reason it took so long is I spent time searching for 2 books, which I must look at and cite. I found one but not the other. It is HUGE (folio size) and 2 volumes, and it is in this room with me. But I cannot find it. This is simply absurd.

I am on a little bit of a high right now! Last night I found out that the study in the manuscript revision my coauthor and I submitted last week won the research award for a professional organization! Because the conference this year has been cancelled, we will be able to present it virtually (and hopefully it will be published before the end of the year too)! I am so excited! It is my coauthor's first research study too.

Now my daily goals are to work on two projects, one I have been trying to get finalized and written to submit for five years (cringe). I added a new coauthor to the project, who is providing a fresh perspective and is motivated to get published. My other project involves three former students of mine, and has been lagging. The April deadline was extended until June, so I am working a little bit on reviewing literature each day while the former students work on their parts. Here we go!

Also, I finally found that 2-volume set, which was smaller than I remembered and also brown not red. And also not as helpful as I had hoped.

Finally finished! Turned out the answer was right there in a methods paper I had read and applied before, but didn't realize/remember could also be applied to a different type of model.

Tomorrow on to the long, long (since Nov.) neglected major R&R (not sure if it will be treated as a revision at this point I'm so late) paper that I've been feeling guilty about for all these months. The truth is, besides the pain of extensive revisions I just sort of fell off my priority list in favor of more recent and exciting papers and publishing with my students. It is a paper with left-over postdoc data, and not a current area of focus for my lab. Nonetheless, it is a paper I think should be published because to shows some things people often think are related are not strongly related, which is important information. So, tomorrow I will go back through the reviews and make notes on how to address each one, so I can start tackling them one at a time.

Oh man, I hear you. If it's any consolation, in 2018 a paper I wrote won a major prize (which included publication in the top subfield journal). Things lagged a bit on the publication side, and in November 2019 I got comments back, along with a list of revisions. I then dragged my feet on those revisions until mid-March 2020, pretty much for the exact same reasons you cite. It felt kind of horrible to do that, but it was sooooo freeing once I handed the revisions in!

Thanks for the cheers!

On the very lagging project, my new colleague pointed out to me yesterday after I posted that what I thought were completed spreadsheets of analyzed data, I had only finished "one tab" on a huge set of tabs within each sheet. I cracked up because I am that "off" lately, but at least I can attest that there is always more research and writing to do!

My plan for the week (measuring minutes instead of words since I'm at the revising, cutting, and reorganizing stage):

  • Monday: 20 minutes on a timer, before noon
  • Tuesday: 60 minutes on a timer
  • Wednesday: 60 minutes on a timer, before noon
  • Thursday: 45 minutes on a timer, before 1pm
  • Friday: 45 minutes on a timer + plot the weekend

Only got to do 30 minutes today, and after 5pm (so much for my "before noon" fantasy) and what I wrote was word vomit, but I did it.

Long marking day ahead, but I'd like to:

  • Have a last look at my chapter and maybe send it off.
  • Write another 200 or so words of the new paper.
  • Start working on a referee report.

I've become tired, and have a number of further household chores to attend to, so I'm going to throw in the towel tonight. It was a very productive day and I put a large dent in my marking, so I don't mind not having worked on the new paper.

I got pulled into a last minute meeting for a grant application I'm involved in yesterday yesterday (reviews finally came and we are trying to do a revision in 2 weeks-- fun times!), and didn't end up getting to my writing task. But I did meet with another collaborator to plan a new paper, so I'm counting that as writing.

Today: at least 30 min. planning revisions on the long-neglected paper, for real this time.

Fell off the wagon a little this week for writing, consumed by a deluge of hundreds of emails and a number of coding tasks for student requests and research. Definitely a crazy amount of writing done though, just none of that really productive.

So far today, managed to spend a solid half hour on writing this new proposal (578 words), while the other half wrote up an idea for a new experiment (449 words).

Yesterday I had meetings for a new large fieldwork proposal where I planned out the teams, meeting with a collaborator for a paper to help finalize toward writeup, so I think those two count as well based on the Puget standard ;)

Managed to make a good start to the day with a solid 30 minute session. Net result of a page toward this newish paper (I have about 10 papers at various states of completion, hence I bounce around), hard to quantify as there was quite a bit of editing as well for this one.

Tasks for the rest of the half day:
Finish code for a graduate student.
Do some analysis for paper that just needs this one figure to be finished.
Finish a 2nd round paper review.
Work on minor revisions for a paper (a welcome smaller set after the responses to round one were no less than 40 pages!)

If flaked on this yesterday, in part because of some unexpected tasks that got dropped on me, in part because of continued resistance. But I got back on course today and did a solid hour. I'm now through mapping out responses to the editor and reviewer 1. I now have the harder task left of dealing with the dreaded reviewer 2.

  • An hour's tidying and re-writing of a mostly extant paper I want to be able to send out soon.

Forgot to check back in yesterday. Managed it, but I'm not very happy with the progress. Every time I wade into that paper I feel stuck in an unstructured fog which should be a lot easier to cut through than it is. It feels like I should be close to done, but it doesn't look it.

I too peer through the fog.  I feel'ya there, P.

Nevertheless, defined the material for the introduction, edited down and expanded some parts.  Much work still to go.  Bogged down in research.

Almost 500 words into feature article on college closing.  Helped to define next article when an alumni slipped me a letter from the president of a certain regional college.  Found a potential outlet to pitch to.

Crafting a creative manuscript for upcoming contest.

Have been making regular progress on work, just struggling to find time to post about it here (and remember to do so). Grading pile has mostly been defeated for the moment, with classes wrapping up this week.

Before the end of the month, I have three tasks:

Didn't get to it till after dinner and almost didn't do it, but made myself start with a timer and ended up working past the end of it for a solid hour total.

Grad student #3 also submitted her paper today! It got rejected from the first journal we submitted to which shook her confidence a bit despite my efforts to buck her up and explain this is just how it goes, so I'm hoping for better luck with this journal. I think its even better with the revisions she made and that the journal is probably a better fit, so I'm guardedly optimistic.

Did not however get to the paper review, which is now late, so will have to do it tomorrow. Tomorrow is my last class of the semester, and while paper grading pain is coming, I should have more time for writing after that.

Writing goals for tomorrow:
Feedback to PIs on grant revision draft

I'm somewhat tempted to send it to a lower-tier journal with a call out on for contributions on a relevant theme. Guess I'll mull it over.

In other news, my weird creative piece has been accepted for the volume, and the editor called it "brilliant", so. That's a nice pat on my broad shoulders!

Forgot to update again-- I did do my hour+ yesterday, and did a little writing today in the form of checking grad student #2's preregistration revisions.

Although i didn't accomplish everything I had hoped to, April was still relatively productive on the writing front:
1. Grad student #1's R&R revised, resubmitted and accepted!
2. Grad student #2's R&R revised and resubmitted.
3. Grad student #3's paper submitted, desk rejected for fit (shows what I know about fit at that journal I guess), and about to be submitted again elsewhere.
4. Big collaboration paper preregistration draft finished and sent to coauthors
5. Long neglected R&R cover letter responses drafted

On to May!

A final success yesterday in the late hours of April. So in review, I made solid progress on a number of writing tasks, but didn't get that damn paper finished (but should in the next couple of days now that classes are over - yay for May).

Reviewed a bunch of proposals.
Revised two papers.
Wrote a contract proposal which looks like it will be funded.
Wrote about a 3rd of a new proposal.
Wrote a decent amount toward several papers.
Completed 3 paper peer reviews.
Finalized my edits and suggestions for 3 new papers that have been submitted (sadly, all coauthor).
Reviewed interdeterminate number of student written projects.

I'll call that decent progress after going to zero the previous month.
